Stake Boating

Over the last few years, 1359 (Beeston) squadron Air Cadets, have volunteered to take part in help staffing the stake boats for each race at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierpont, in Nottingham. The cadets have to line the boats up until the referees approve that the boats are in the right positions. When the referees do approve, the races begin and the next boats get ready to take their positions in which the cadets have to repeat their routine. Cadets are told how far to pull or push each pontoon through a radio, which cadets have to be careful not to drop in the water… (Mentioning no names.)
The cadets enjoy a good experience and have an enjoyable day throughout. The event organisers provided plenty of food and drink.
The inclement weather made it hard at times for the cadets to control the boats in the high winds, although the weather can also make the highlight of the weekend. The last time 1359 volunteered for the event, one boy was so committed to holding onto the boat, that he fell in. Luckily, the life jacket which was provided to each cadet kept him afloat until he was retrieved out of the water. However, the cadets try hard and the contestants are always very grateful for the help we give. In previous events, some cadets have also found some of the contestants competing are also part of the ATC.
Thanks to the committed cadets who give up their free time to do weekend events such as Stake Boating they have a fun day out as they get to bond with other cadets in the squadron.
